The Importance of Animal Rescue:
BC SPCA
Domestic Animal Rescue is one of the most talked-about topics in the last 10 years and there have been several documentaries about the unethical aspect of dog breeding, with the most recent one being an English documentary called “Puppy Farms” that showed the horror behind this industry.
Because of this, people all around the world are getting more conscious about rescuing animals instead of buying them. And that is why associations like the BC SPCA operate successfully in the province.
Who is the BC SPCA?
“The mission of the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) is to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm, and wild animals in British Columbia.” (BCSPCA. (2021, October 29). About Us.)
This organization has been helping animals since 1895, starting as a shelter and evolving into the most important animal rights association in British Columbia. They work closely with each city’s government to aid in animal rescues, spaying and neutering and even have some animal hospitals that offer different services at affordable prices.
Their biggest service is their adoption service, in which they match surrendered/stray/rescued animals including dogs, cats, small animals, horses, etc.
How does BC SPCA help the community?
In 2021, the organization had its biggest year regarding helping animals. “So many pet guardians have been impacted financially by the COVID-19 pandemic, and we were able to expand our community pet food programs right across the province, helping 34,141 animals,” said Chortyk. The organization has been helping throughout the pandemic those pet owners who do not have enough income to feed their animals and when the flooding happened in B.C, SPCA stepped up to help the stranded animals and provide free emergency boarding, and medical assistance, and free supplies as well.
The impact of Animal Rescue: Jasper and Panda’s story.
Jasper and Panda are two ferrets that were given to SPCA in the Kelowna region after being abused by the owner’s partner. When they were posted on the website, a couple from Kamloops contacted the branch and apply to adopt them.
For three days, SPCA made sure to see if they are the right fit and they will take care of them and the couple was accepted. After that, the pets that were abused were given a loving home and the proper care.
“I owe a lot to SPCA, they were incredible in helping us adopt the ferrets and they have been the best part of my life for the past 2 years. I’m eternally grateful” said Corina, the new owner of the ferrets.
Conclusion:
Animal Rescue has immense benefits for both animals and people that are seeking to bring a pet to their home. It is an ethical and noble mission that encourages people to pay attention to the animals already in need of a home instead of breeders.
